Selling Your Web Development Services: Tips for Success
![]() |
If you're interested in providing web development services for a living, it's important to understand what makes a business successful. The first crucial aspect is good planning. This means deciding whether you want to work for a company or for yourself. It also means obtaining the right training and education if necessary. Even experienced developers can use a refresher course now and then or study up on new technology. Once you've educated yourself and decided to begin your career as a web site developer, it's time to move on to the next step.
Creating a quality portfolio is a very important part of any web developer's career. In addition, you may also want to write a resume detailing your education and work history. But what do you do if you're brand new to the business and haven't obtained your first client yet? It's easy -- simply create a good variety of sample web sites to show prospective clients the kind of work you can do. Then as you complete jobs, you'll have more to add to your portfolio.
Another good thing to have is clients who are willing to provide testimonials for your services. A few glowing words from previous customers can help potential new clients decide they want to use you. Simply asking a satisfied client if they will write a brief testimonial for you to use is all you need to do. Most people will be happy to help, especially if they're happy with your work.
Once you've got a portfolio and testimonials, you are ready to begin advertising your services more aggressively. There are lots of different places to market yourself. In your local area, try placing an ad in the newspaper and getting listed in the Yellow Pages. If you have the budget, television and radio can be highly effective ways to get the word out about your business.
Advertising your web development services online is yet another way to market yourself. You can try pay-per-click advertising, rent ad space on a high traffic web site, participate in banner exchanges, build a web site detailing your services, advertise via your signature line in appropriate forums (be sure to follow all the policies and don't spam), or even recruit people to do your online advertising for you. There are many different ways for a creative, skilled developer to get the exposure they need. And the more exposure you get, the more clients you'll get -- and the more successful you'll be!
