Web Design Development -- A Growing Career Field

Web design development is one of the hottest career paths out there these days. With so many millions of web sites out there, it's no wonder! One of the best things about pursuing a career as a web designer is the flexibility. There are many options available to you when it comes to how and where you want to do your job. Not only that, but there are lots of options available when it comes to education. Depending on the type of web designer you want to be, you could go to college or you could teach yourself.

If you want to work for a company as a web site designer or site developer, then it's best to receive formal education. However, if you plan to go into business for yourself or work as a freelancer, education is not as important as a good portfolio. While many designers working for themselves or on a freelance basis do have a formal education, many others are self-taught. There are benefits and drawbacks involved with going into business on your own. You can work when you want, from the comfort of home if you choose. You can decide how much work you want to do and which projects you want to take on.

However, unlike a regular 9 to 5 with a company, there's no guarantee that you're going to get a steady paycheck. You get paid if you are able to obtain clients and complete the work in a satisfactory matter. If you don't find work, you don't get paid. Also, there are no benefits like those you may receive from an employer such as paid vacations and medical insurance. Not only that, but you will be responsible for paying all your own taxes, which most self-employed people do on a quarterly basis. Many successful freelance web developers find the loss of such benefits and the hassle of keeping track of taxes a small price to pay for the flexibility and control they enjoy.

If you're interested in a career in web design development, read and study as much as you can on the subject. Decide if you want to pursue a formal education and work for an employer, or strike out on your own. If you plan to go the freelance route, create a portfolio of sample sites to show prospective clients. After you get a few successful jobs under your belt, your confidence will grow and so will your business!
